Armada Book
Over the years, I have been interested in conceptual and material content of wearable art. This search has made me explore the difference between apparel and jewelry and has made me re-think what roles and implication body adornment plays in contemporary society. I am drawn to the history of wearable art, the power and meaning objects have over a wearer, and how body adornment transcends over time.
My Puerto Rican background influenced my fascination for marine life and my Spanish heritage brought life to “Armada”. “Armada” or “armed” is inspired by the armored metalwork worn by Spanish conquistadores who took over the island while enslaving women. With these feminine copper breastplates, I aim to give women a sense of empowerment and protection unlike colonial times. I celebrate their existence and associate them with natural elements.
